How I Setup for Online Piano Lesson and Masterclass

- Hi everybody, I wanted to shoot a quick video of the setup that I have for online teaching in my studio. So, follow me, we're gonna go through a quick tour. So lots of you have been asking me how I have the setup that I have on the keyboard with a camera on top and another camera on the side. So, I use something called a C-Stand, and this thing is very, very, very sturdy, and very reliable and you can adjust it in a million ways and it has a boom arm which the camera's mounted right at the end of the boom arm.
And again, you can adjust the height, the angle that you want, and this is actually a pretty old video camera. It's probably seven or eight years old. It's a Sony camcorder that I just had. I don't like to just buy equipment and just let it sit. I like to use everything that I have and put it to good use before I just go and start splurging on new equipment.
So for a while, I haven't really old and kind of unstable set up that was holding the camera and I kept bumping into it and it kept falling. So this thing is the newest addition to the studio and it's super, super sturdy. So I highly recommend it if you want this kind of a setup. So this is the top-angle camera and let's take a look at the other camera that I have, which is a Sony FDR AX100 HD 4k camcorder.
It's a real workhorse, I've had it for several years. It's just super, super reliable. It's a fantastic piece of equipment. And it sort of is the center piece of gear that I use in the studio. So, between these two cameras, I have them run through this audio video mixer by Roland. This thing is really fantastic.
What it does is it allows me to toggle between both of my cameras in real time. So, while I'm teaching online, or doing a masterclass live, or any kind of a teaching situation, or interview, or anything like that, all I need to do is just switch between different camera angles or different cameras and I can also do a split screen, which you can see right now, which I love and they're all customized, so you can customize the shot that you want.
So you kind of play director, which is something new to me 'cause I'm not a director. I also, is a third camera connect my iPad Pro which has my score. So, if I wanna annotate anything on the score, all I have to do is just write on it and it's seen immediately by the student. So this is an awesome setup because this is actually run through the Apple TV right here.
And so the apple TV's connected into the Roland as a third camera. Instead of a camera, you're actually just getting a feed through the Wi-Fi from the iPad. So, when I teach online, I like to be heard really clearly, so, I'm actually wearing enough of the ear microphone, as opposed to, for instance, having a boom mike like this because if I have a boom mic hanging, let's say on top of the piano, if I move my head or anything, then the student might hear me a little bit less well, and this, of course, stays on me.
I have two mics right here that are just for the piano. And these are great mics by a company called DPA. I run all these mics through another device which is called the apogee quartet. It's made by Apogee. And it's an audio interface. So, the mics are running through it, and I could control the volume of each mic, like for one more piano, I just bring this up, and voice is this one and I just control it this way.
There are some special effects in here, for instance, if a student does really well, I press this button and it gives the student applause I don't know if you can hear it, but if you can, that's pretty cool. There're also other little silly features in it. And everything runs through my MacBook Pro, which is sort of the heart of the beast.
To see the student, I use a 40-inch monitor and this is a very standard High Definition 1080, it's not a 4k. What I love is these monitor stands, these carts actually because they have wheels, and they're made by a company called Lock Tech, and they're really awesome. I've got them on both monitors.
And the reason I have two monitors is because on this monitor, I see the student and on this monitor, I actually see myself and the setup of the two cameras just to make sure everything is working properly. So, there're no silly accidents going on if something is disconnected, et cetera, just to make sure.
And the way I hear the students is through these speakers which are made by Norman, they're fantastic studio monitors that produce a really good sound or powered, so they don't have to be connected to an amplifier and they connect directly into the quartet. Let's talk about lighting. So lighting is really, really important for many reasons, especially when you're on camera, you wanna make sure that everything is clear, there're no shadows, and everything is well lit in your videos.

As sort of the main light source, I use this Apature 120D. It is Such a good light, I cannot tell you enough how wonderful it is. It is controllable through a remote, so I can actually dim it and make it brighter as I need. And it has two filters, so it's kind of on the soft side if you need it to be and brighter if you need it to be.
They're super adjustable and just creates a wonderful, wonderful light. That's really all you need. I've got a few other lights around the studio just to help when things, when you need a little bit more light or when it's dark outside, which right now it is really nice and sunny here in Los Angeles.
All right, so, that's a wrap for our tour. Thanks so much for watching. And if you have any comments or questions, please shoot me an email, press the like button, subscribe button, and I'll see you guys real soon. I've got a lot of great videos coming up. Hope you can check them out. Peace.
