The piano style often referred to as the "Red Garland style" was if you play the melody with your right hand in octaves: and then you add fifths in between... or fourths. The very often, fifths. And with your left hand you also play the A voicings the B voicings that we are working on, so if I was playing the Red Garland style I could play something like this: When you play in a Red Garland style make sure you play the chords with your left hand in an easy way and repetitive: like that.

You're combining the melody with your right hand as well as playing the chords with your left hand. Sometimes it doesn't fit that well and it doesn't matter, if you're playing the Red Garden style. This is more like an effect that I use from time to time to play this kind of Red Garland style and it's good to combine that with something else.

If you're playing in the ending of... let's say you... playing an end of an up-tempo tune, for example: You're just adding the Red Garland style every now and then, not that regularly. Anyway, that was the Red Garland style and here is a summary: To play the Red Garland style you need to play in octaves with your right hand then add 4th's and 5th's in between.

In your left hand, you play A and B voicings and different rootless voicings and I go through all of this step-by-step in my Jazz Piano course by the way. The Red Garland style can be used both in ballads and up-tempo tunes and most jazz pianists use this style in combination with other things.
